HEAD IN HEDGE (II: ADVANCED)

This is a continuation exercise after completing the beginners level. Let’s pick it up from here.

Sink into a process of becoming multiple: vibrant green leathery leaves and twiggy branches –
you have multiple surfaces now. Some of you wiggle on the breeze of air, others remain safely sheltered.
Your being is contained by the hedge. You are being soundly held together.
There is nothing more to wish for now.

HEAD IN A HEDGE (I: BEGINNER)

Green hedges have a very widespread popularity.
Though they are usually just appreciated for their exterior qualities,
their interior has the unique potential to hold your thoughts and wrap itself around your mind.
There is always a hedge thick enough to stick your head inside, perhaps to camouflage your deepest secrets.
Between leaves and branches they are not very likely to be uncovered after all.
No matter what your intentions are, here is how to go about it:

1. Find a hedge
2. Appreciate it.
3. Approach it.
4. Bend over and look at it very closely.
5. Stick your head inside.
6. Don’t mind the rest of your body parts – think of yourself as just a head in a hedge.

Buxusland

A short yet very elaborately documented visit to Buxusland Ridderkerk, a boxwood nursery in the South of Holland, resulting in a series of evergreen artist portraits.

HEDGE-HEADED

YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SENSE OF WHAT YOUR CHARACTERS ARE DOING WHEN YOU ARE NOT LOOKING IN ORDER TO SELL THE PLAY

For the Piet Zwart Institute MFA graduation show ‘Tripping Autonomy’ I made an installation consisting of a coniferous textured working fountain and some loose elements/sculptures that were made around the concept of mimicking the architectural characteristics of the space (De Kroon, Rotterdam). The sculptures where scattered around in different places in the group show, held together by a choreography in the form of a little map. The fountain was shown outdoors at Charlois Speciaal earlier in 2018. Photo’s were taken by Vera Mennens and Lotte Stekelenburg (courtesy of the Piet Zwart MFA).
