During a four-week working period on site in 2012, I built a freestanding wall in a room that already contained a small, existing one—shielding a basement hatch. This original wall caught my attention: L-shaped, not structural, painted in the same muted tone as the rest of the room, with matching baseboards. It seemed both functional and decorative, quietly present, trying not to be noticed—yet, slightly off. I made a second wall in response. Using the same materials and finishes, but larger in size, I placed it nearby, folding it subtly into a corner. It was a gesture of companionship—adding something that blended in, quietly disturbing the order.
